A Historic Moment: Klang to be Given City Status

Klang’s rise to city status paves the way for infrastructure innovation, with 21 projects approved for immediate commencement in Selangor.

The federal government has given the green light to upgrade the Klang Municipal Council to a city council. Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming announced that Klang will become the fourth city in Selangor, joining Subang Jaya, Shah Alam, and Petaling Jaya. Established in 1890, the council has met all the criteria for city status, demonstrating financial strength and sustainability.

Infrastructure and Development Plans

The ministry has approved 21 projects worth RM5 million to enhance public facilities in Klang. These projects include upgrades to the Port Klang Market, stalls, roads, and pedestrian and bicycle lanes. The projects are set to begin soon and are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Preparations for Proclamation Ceremony

The council is actively working on a new logo and flag for the ceremony to proclaim Klang as a city. The date for the proclamation ceremony will be decided once the consent of Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah is obtained.

Economic Impact and Future Prospects

The upgrade to city status will strengthen the Selangor government’s efforts towards establishing a Greater Klang Valley administration. This status will enable Klang to continue to develop as a sustainable city with vast economic opportunities, especially in high-speed internet technology and fully digital government services.

Additional Funding and Support

The federal and state governments have agreed to jointly allocate RM10 million for the development of the city council. Additionally, the Selangor government will inject a special allocation of RM5 million to Klang, with a request for RM24.6 million from the Ministry of Works to upgrade the roads.
